Tennis

Tennis is a racket sport played between two players (singles) or two teams of two players each (doubles). The game is played on a rectangular court divided by a net, with the objective of hitting a ball over the net into the opponent’s court, aiming to score points by making the ball land within the designated court boundaries. Players use strung rackets to strike a felt-covered rubber ball.

Tennis involves a variety of shots, including serves, forehands, backhands, volleys, and overhead smashes. Points are scored when the opposing player fails to return the ball correctly, and the game is typically played in sets, with players aiming to win a specified number of games to claim victory.

The scoring system is unique, utilizing terms such as love (0), fifteen (1), thirty (2), and forty (3) to denote points. Matches can take place on different surfaces, including grass, clay, or hard courts, each affecting gameplay dynamics.

Tennis is governed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and has a global following, with major tournaments such as the Grand Slam events (Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open) drawing significant attention and participation.
